Xorg problems

I'm having problems starting xorg under gentoo. I wish I could be specific, but all it gives me is "modules failed to load" without specifying which modules...

What I can say is I have a Radeon 9800 Pro, and I first tried xorg 6.7 without the ati-drivers. Then, I installed ati-drivers, which said it needed 6.8, so I upgraded...tried running X with and without opengl-update ati, and all these instances gave me the same modules failed to load error, so I don't know if it's the video or not.

Does anyone know of any steps to try to resolve this, or possibly steps to just redo the whole thing that might fix this (reinstall fonts and all that good stuff)?

does /var/log/Xorg.0.log give you any helpful info?

None whatsoever...

The only problem I see is (I can't type verbatim because I need to use windows to get here) something about a warning with the fonts, but it was just a message about a duplicate entry or something to that effect, not an error.

do the errors go off of the screen before you can see them or it is not giving you any errors at all (generally when X bails it always spits out errors of some kind or another)

The X screen doesn't even flicker...I assume it's not even loading. It just doesn't spit out any specifical errors at all...I'm used to Can't find screen or something to that effect. This just says Modules can't be loaded.

is everything you need for the radeon already loaded into the kernel? (can't help you much here, I've always used nvidia based cards )

Should I build DRI and the Radeon (listed under DRI) into the kernel, or would that conflict with the ati-drivers?

dunno. Try the README that either came with the ati driver or on ati's site. (like i said, I could help you with nvidia, but never used the ati drivers before). I'm sure something in the documentation for the ati driver deals with dri and how to configure it. Maybe try the hardware forum on this board, as I've seen alot of radeon questions so I'm sure someone around here can help you with that.

Thanks for the info, I'll check the README first then go to the hardware forum.

Out of curiosity, how do I find out where emerge puts stuff? I'm not sure where it put the ati-drivers, or the docs...
