Xorg dri

I have been using the ATi drivers for some time (and getting good preformance, I might add), with my ATi Radeon 9200. However, anything OpenGL based, will inevitably crash, at a (seemingly) random time. In another thread, it was suggested that I switch over to the Xorg dri drivers, but I do not know how to do so. (Yes, I have searched...).
Can anyone help me with this?

(I am running gentoo, with the 2.4.26-gentoo-r9 kernel)

Thanks in advance.
