XMMS stops between songs.

With my Mandrake 10.0 setup, XMMS will play for a while then when it switches to a new song, it gives me a "Sound card not detected" error. It doesn't happen between all the songs, and it doesn't happen with the same songs all the time...it's just happens arbitrarily. Anyone know why?

P.S. Don't hold me to this, but it seems to happen more in KDE than other environments.

yea, its because your sound card is a cheap piece of dodo (like mine)

sound cards don't mix audio (at least the cheap ones don't), which means only 1 program can use the sound card at once .... thus why you get that error (like me)

if your in kde then tell xmms to output the audio to arts , if in gnome, tell it to output to esd

esd and arts will mix audio of multiple programs, and output that to the sound card (giving the effect of multiple program using sound)

Thanks guys, both aRts and ALSA seem to do the trick. What's the difference between the two?

arts is a software mixer ...... while alsa is a system of drivers for the kernel ... btw, how do you get alsa to mix the audio?, it doesn't do that for me

On second thought, I'm not sure that ALSA does, but aRts does for sure. I've been using it all night and multiple application sounds are definitely coming through loud and clear.
