xmms doesn't play mp3 again  but plays audio cd

after playin with the sound configuration in xmms the player doesn't play mp3 files
but plays audio cd....
i ran alsaconf and the soundcard is identified and configuration was saved.
but still the same
i changed trough different output-plugins still the same
but i think i noticed that the soundcard (ess1869) is not longer listed
in the oss plugin under audiodevice and i do not know how to bring it back in there
or to assign the alternative device ( /dev/dsp )
it only says default

Not sure what distro you have installed but some do not come with .mp3 support by default and need to be updated...

Check your distro's home page for mp3 support info...

Their's a reason why LQ asks you what distribution you're using. Please correct this in your profile.
I can assure you their's an ultra easy way to fix this, but it that's all distro related.
