i've determined that it will play unencrypted dvd's. Now, I've download dvdcss, and i've tried a rpm -U as the instructions said... but it doesn't seem to be working. do you have any thoughts on this? when i try to uninstall dvdcss it said 'package libdvdcss is not installed'. how wierd is that.

also, do you have any idea how I would be able to do a complete uninstall of xine? i mean... completely clear it out so I could start fresh. I tried to just remove it with the package manager, but it didn't clear all the previous settings. thanks.

the settings are in the directory ~/.xine. Just remove it and the previous settings will be gone.

haha. um... hopefully my stupidity will help somebody else. It seems I was trying to install the wrong dvdcss. the one you need to install is the i386 file... NOT the src rpm. yea.

however... now that i am running the dvd's again, they seem very, very choppy. also, i'm having trouble reading my iso cd's from my dvd drive when I'm using the package installer. do you think these two things are related. all of this just sort of happened in the last day, i have no idea why. i don't think i burned the iso's wrong. in fact, i'm sure i did it right because it CAN install from them. but it will freeze up sometimes. any thoughts would be great. thanks.

choppy dvd playback usually means that you don't have dma set for you dvd player.

as root:

/sbin/hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

if that doesn't work for you, you may have to try doing some fiddling in your boot loader to use scsi emulation. if this is needed, you'll also have to relink your /dev/dvd shortcut.

sometimes, a problem like that is DMA not enabled. As root do

hdparm -d1 /dev/hdc

this turns on DMA for your drive. Maybe this is all there is to it (it was for me, which took me an awful long time to figure out...)

Edit: Oops. Same as megaspaz above
