Xfce4 major problem

Currently have Gentoo installed (2.6.9-gentoo-r4)

Loaded xfce4 and actually got it running and working. I installed mozilla and got it to work with that, then I installed samba and did a restart from xfce, before i started it again I did
Code:
emerge -u world
I tried to start it again after boot and now it says this
Code:
alien cyb0rg51 $ startxfce4

/usr/bin/startxfce4: X server already running on display :0.0
xsetroot: unable to open display ':0.0'
xrdb: Connection refused
xrdb: Can't open display ':0.0'
/etc/xfce4/xinitrc: line 27: xscreensaver: command not found
which: no xfce4-session in
(/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/blackdown-jre-1.4.2.01/bin)

(xfce-mcs-manager:7961): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

(xfwm4:7962): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

(xftaskbar4:7963): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

(xfdesktop:7964): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

(xfcalendar:7965): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:

(xfce4-panel:7967): Gtk-WARNING **: cannot open display:
Error: Can't open display: :0.0
A crash occured in the panel
Please report this to the xfce4-dev@moongroup.com list
Meanwhile the panel will be restarted
I tried deleting ~/.xfce4 but that didnt work

Whats even more bizarra is that if I do "startx" it will load and I can start "xfce4" inside of the default X-session. I have no idea what the problem is.. If anyone knows plz reply

(also i am a bit of a newbie)

Re: Xfce4 major problem

That's not as major as it looks.

I'm not familiar with startxfce4, but it sounds like it's borked.

There are a couple of things you can do. Reinstalling the xfce4 packages would be a good place to start. Installing a display manager like (x|k|g)dm might fix it up too.

Me personally though, I'd do this:

Code:
~/ $ cat > ~/.Xsession
xterm &
exec xfce4
^d

~/ $ startx
