xdotool Error: Can't open display: (null)

I'm logging in to a centos 6 machine with ssh (from another machine) and I'm trying to send a simple key press command in the (putty) terminal using xdotool. I've never used xdotool before but I keep getting
Code:
Error: Can't open display: (null)
all the time. I read somewhere I have to do
Code:
export DISPLAY=':0.0'
but I don't know where or how this should be executed, nothing worked when I ran this is a terminal. How do I get xdotool to work without this error? I just want to send a simple key press command using a terminal so is there any other program that would be better for my needs?

update: solved, the command is
export DISPLAY=':0.0' xdotool blah-de-blah
I can't get xdotool to do anything (lol) but at least I got rid of the error message
