X won't run without /usr/local/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper
I did some spring cleaning, deleted obsolete files (so I thought). That included /usr/local/libexec/dbus-daemon-launch-helper , which was ancient; I had a newer version in /usr/libexec Years ago I had an X problem that I dealt with by building my own X software (pain!). This must be a relic I forgot to clean out. But after I deleted it X wouldn't run. Fortunately I could link the version in /usr/libexec to /usr/local/libexec I don't see how this makes sense. Xorg.3.log records:

A duckduckgo searched turned up a thread on LQ from a fellow who had the same symptoms but never solved them. Sorry.
I figured it out. When I built my own X, I kept on using /etc/dbus-1; when I went back to package X, the installation program respected it, installed its files in /etc/dbus-1.new. Although there's no reference to the local version of launch-helper, somehow they referred to it.
Why does not your package manager cleans up old software?
Because one may have changed a configuration file. When Slackware upgrades a package with a configuration file, if the old ones have changed it leaves them in place and names the new ones with .new added. This is usually the right thing to do. I neglected to fix up this case.
Searching for an answer to this question, I found an old thread on LQ from a guy who had exactly the symptoms I reported. The thread went unsolved. I hope this helps others.
