X failing to load; AddScreen/InitScreen failing for driver 0

X is failing to load with the error "AddScreen/InitScreen failing for driver 0" followed by "Fatal error 104 (Connetion Reset by Peer) on X server ':0:0' after 0 requests ..."
BTW: using Slack 8.1
I'm using the generic VGA compatible for my SiS315 AGP card because none of the other drivers work. Any ideas about what to do, such as another driver that works with it or and settings to tweak? AFAIK the kernel has support for AGP (which shouldn't be the problem. I'm obviously at the console.) and that's all I know.

Ahh... It's great to be back to Linux after... Many months... No more BSOD's.. Just cryptic error messages... Like I got before... In Windows... Oi vey... I'll just stop before I hurt myself.
