X drops back to 640x480 for no apparent reason

I leave my computer on in Linux when I go to work. I've been using it through a telnet connection all day and when I get home I notice that the resolution has dropped from 1280xsomething to 640xsomething.

With ctrl-shift-+ I can only get to 1 other mode: 320xsomething

I also saw a message from wmaker that there were too many icons on the desktop, but I suppose that's a result rather than a cause.

I can't find any errors in /var/log/XFree.0.log

Any ideas?
