wlan and kernel source --- help!!!

Hello everyone,

I [a newbee] sure could do with some help here...

I have just installed libranet 2.81 on a clean system ---yippee!

I am trying to get my netgear MA311 PCI wireless card going...

[1] I have downloaded the linux-wlan-ng driver and during its setup process it asks for the location of the kernel source...

[2] After trying to read around I THINK it exists as a tar.bz2 file in /usr/src ...?
I manged to uncompress and it created a directory called linux-2.4.21 or something like that

[3] I then for some reason unknown to me [most likely from articles i half understood] created a link
ln -sf linux-2.4.21 linux

[4] When i returned to the wlan setup and gave the location as described above...either the real directory or the link ...

The error message is that it can find the headers but not the full source code..???

I hate not knowing things properly and part of my problem is my lack of understanding of what i am actually doing but i suppose that comes with time and such experiences..

For now however...a hand-held step by step solution would help and comfort me tremendously!

Many thanks.

It looks like your source code hasn't been configured. You will need to actually go through and recompile your kernel.

You might get away with copying your distro's .config file (if it supplies one) into your /usr/src/linux directory then running:
Code:
make oldconfig dep
Otherwise, you will have to go through and compile the whole thing, because it's important that the /usr/src/linux directory tree matches your running kernel exactly. You should find pleanty of guides around on how to compile your kernel; it's not that hard but there are a few gotchas to be wary of.
