Wine and FreeType problems

I am running LinEx (see distros) a debian-based distro. When I try to run Win apps under Wine I get an error:

please install a version of FreeType greater than or equal to 2.0.5.

Please:

1. Where do I get this?
2. What format (e.g. deb., tar. gz etc.)
3. Where do I put it?
4. How do I install it, i.e. in console mode (root or user?), what should I type and what messages should I expect to see?

many thanks

Rick
