Question why would gdm use so much cpu?

I just ran top, and the output is showing me that gdm is using half the CPU. If I watch it while doing no other work, the CPU for this daemon will go over 70%. This doesn't make any sense to me. This started happening only recently, as before my SETI process would use 90+ percent (as I desire) when the system is idle. Anyone have any ideas? Below is the relevant lines from top.

1742 root 15 0 11880 3120 10m S 51.1 0.8 63:59.29 gdm-binary
1951 gino 25 0 1820 612 1572 R 24.2 0.2 33:52.97 setiathome
2788 gino 15 0 24928 12m 20m S 13.3 3.2 0:02.94 gnome-terminal
