That would be a great analogy if Linux (or even Windows) was a single function system. On a related note, comparing them to kitchens might to a better analogy. Windows is more the equivalent of the kitchens that you find in those "cookie-cutter" houses. If you want a custom kitchen with 6-burner range, separate refrigerator and freezer, and a prep station, then you probably want to design/install it yourself or have someone do it for you. Linux gives you the same flexibility.
