Programs CAN go just about anywhere, but the usual locations are /usr/bin, usr/local/bin, /opt---and maybe a few others. To find them, do this (as root):
updatedb
locate <nameofprogram>

Depending on the install method, they will automatically go into your menus (This should be automatic if you use a package manager--but maybe NOT in Slackware, which takes pride in not doing any thinking for you).

Getting a shortcut into a panel depends on the GUI you are using. In Gnome, you just right-click on a panel and follow the prompts. I don't recall for KDE.

well, does the file /var/lib/slocate exist? if so, it could be a permissions problem.

If not, you might need to created the database file for slocate to use.

/var/lib/slocate is found and contains a file ¨slocate.db.tmp¨

I guess that means everything is working properly. Note that the message is just a warning. This will take a while, as the program is building a database of the entire filesystem, and the existence of slocate.db.tmp probably means that it had started to do so.

Just log into a root shell, and use this command:

updatedb --prunepaths='/tmp /usr/tmp /var/tmp /proc /sys'

and wait until you get the prompt back. If the prompt comes back right away, move slocate.db.tmp to slocate.db

mv oldfilename newfilename

Then, do the updatedb command.

Then, do:

locate .desktop | less

that's where all you programs are that have quick launch files. Otherwise, you can do:

CTRL+F2

and type a program name. Programs don't always go in the kde menu. It's something you'll have to live with.
