Yep, same BS as we get from AutoDesk: http://mozillalinks.org/2010/04/song...gale-picks-up/

"Not enough Linux users! ... But we'll go with MacOSX, even though there's even less users there!"

At least you could try the Nightingale branch instead!

As for DVD authoring, burning, ripping, etc. All-in-one ... I hate Nero's methods. It's slow, incompatible, works intermittently, and you've got minimal options with a bloated package. Even on Windows I used Nero ONLY for burning / imaging CD/DVDs - there's no other use for it ... hang on, even for that CDBurnerXP, cdrtools, BwgBurn, etc. (on Windows) is better, faster, less prone to making coasters, etc. The main reason? They try to SPECIALIZE in doing one thing PERFECTLY instead of being a Fat-Jack-of-all-and-Master-of-none!

For DVD ripping there's also a plethora of much better stuff than Nero (CloneDVD, DVDFab, GordianKnot, MediaCoder etc.) - all much more useful! For DVD Authoring, Nero's is good enough to make a photo-slide-viewer ... that's it! Even M$'s Windows Media Encoder is better, and then Windows Movie Maker is even better than that. Then there's DVD Creator, DVD Flick. For recoding there's nothing better than VirtualDub, there might be "easier to use" but much less powerful (e.g. MediaCoder). Similar proggies on Linux - again they're specializing in what they do, not trying to do all other stuff as well.

I can't understand the "reasoning" behind having to have a 200MB mega-do-all program which does everything poorly. You only perform one of those tasks at any one time, especially if the program does it all-in-one (like Nero does). There's no possibility of working on a DVD creation while another is busy burning, Nero disallows this. With multiple separate programs you're capable of running more than one at a time, making full use of your multi-core CPU, try do that with Nero! Analogous to the MSO Word / OOo Write+Draw comparison. Word has its vector drawing stuff built-in and it's CR@P (both for use as a word processor and a drawing program), Write uses Draw (a separate program) to specialize in making vector drawings ... this is a LOT better to use and more powerful (in both word processing and vector imaging).

For "virtualization" you mean something like Alcohol / DeamonTools / VirtualCloneDrive / etc? Doesn't linux have the ability to mount an ISO image directly in its core? ... Agreed! Why would you need another "virtual disc app"? The very basis of linux can already do that - it's standard! If you want to be able to mount most image files (ISO, IMG, BIN, MDF, NRG, etc.) get fuseiso. Though all CD/DVD rippers should at the very least be able to make an ISO image already, as would all CD/DVD burning software be able to (at least) read ISO's, there's no real need to use any of the other file formats.

EDIT: or if you don't like the command line - http://www.google.com/search?sclient...&bih=893&cad=h

He probably wants to run some pirated games in Wine! The way you can do through winblows and Alcohol - to "emulate" the CD/DVD "bugs" on most game CD's - especially those from EA!

So yes, I suppose if you wanted to become illegal someone could go and write some similar proggy ... just be careful of men in black cars sitting outside your front yard!

Haven't tried this.

What kind of CAD? There are lots.

Voice recognition. There are projects.

Alternative to iTunes. Here are a couple. Why anyone would want that bloated itunes crap on a machine I don't know. But to each his own.
gtkpod
gpodder
http://banshee.fm/

Update mplayer
What function is it missing? I can't think of anything that mplayer, mencoder, ffmpeg won't due if you have the correct codecs installed. If mplayer doesn't apeal to you give VLC a try.

Better support for command line arguments in wine
Like what. are you enclosing the command in quotes?
Code:
wine "/path/to/command -switch"
A good DVD player like power dvd
mplayer dvd://1
mplayer dvdnav://
VLC
Totem
gmplayer
etc.

Web designing software
nvu
bluefish
quanta
screem
http://kompozer.net/
Code your pages by hand using an IDE ,such as Eclipse with an html plugin http://www.eclipse.org/

Utorrent for Linux
Transmission
Deluge
ktorrent
bittorrent
rtorrent
etc.

Encryption software similar to steganos
Looks like that can be done with a backup and encryption
dump, restore, amanda, bacula, dd, rsync, rsnapshot, Arkeia etc.
pgp, gpg, http://www.gnupg.org/

I wouldn't go so far as to say "want", but it is the only way I know of to redeem iTunes Gift Cards. (What, you were silly enough to give Apple your credit card details?)

It bugs me that I have to keep a Windows notebook around just for iTunes. One of these days I'll just have to Virtual Box it.

.[QUOTE] Voice recognition. There are projects.
[\QUOTE]

Thanks for the YouTube links but you know better than me apart from a startup project in a university... speech recognition hasn't reached anywhere in Linux.

Simple GUI that any business user with a blackberry can use.

A very good replacement for AutoCAD Mech. that has all the features of AutoCAD.

If I wanted to use vlc I wouldn't want mplayer updated. Mplayer was and is the oldest media player ever the pride of open source. The web page needs to be updated.

Something along the lines of Serif software products I have tried quanta and nvu and wouldn't recommend it.

As far as encryption is concerned I think Steganos has a far simpler GUI

Yes copy protection emulation is useful... even if you own an original cd of a game ESP starforce or securom. I have never tried to use wine with original cd games...if you want to make any inferences from that go right ahead.

Yes was referring to command line arguments that you give on startup of a game to alter the resolution built into the windows game. It is currently not working in wine.

Hope I have clarified on all counts

Better DVD player something in between a media centre and a media player .... A DVD home theatre whatever happened to xine?

You can pass command line switches to processes being launched with wine (I do it all the time with Steam games) but it can be painful in the extreme to get the quotes right around quoted parameters.

Instead of wine have you tried wineconsole? Another alternative would be to put the desired command in a .cmd file and have wine/wineconsole launch that.

One Very Good Dictionary for all Uses

I have reviewed some of the responses to this thread and would like to propose a slight variation to the other dictionary request. First I am not much of a computer expert, and second I understand hardware much better then software. So please don't expect a deep understanding of the problems this will present. Also this may be possible now and I just don't know about it.

I would like to see a "Master Dictionary" for all uses on my computer. Something like a GUI in Linux, where you can select the one you like. I prefer to use the same dictionary for all activity; email, web response, office functions, and anywhere else I write with the computer. Spelling the same weird terms, the same way each time, would be a big help. Definition, in addition to correct spelling, would nice. The ability to highlight a word in something I am reading and get a definition would be very nice. I also value a dictionary program that can work it's way through more then one incorrect letter in a misspelled word. Having a "Master Dictionary" that would remain while changing web browsers, office programs and other app's would be a real help. Of course this would also have to allow selection of dictionaries in many languages.

You might try
Stardict
Goldendict
Babiloo
for offline dictionaries. Stardict supports many of those requirements and runs on Linux, BSD, Microsoft.
