What is the purpose of "share modes" in a samba share?


any ideas?

I assume you mean user level, share level, etc.? If so, have a read through the Samba docs at Samba Security Modes for a better explanation than I could give.

non, i mean in a share, such as:

[ netlogon ]
path = /etc/samba/netlogon
browsable = no
etc...
share modes = yes

According to http://samba.ausics.net/samba/docs/u...amba/appb.html it:

Directs Samba to support Windows-style whole-file (deny mode) locks. Do not change.
Default: YES
Looks like it doesn't normally need to be explicitly used since it defaults to yes and shouldn't be changed.
