It's a linker option:

`-s'
Remove all symbol table and relocation information from the
executable.
So I guess it strips the output.

D00d, utilize your man pages:
Code:
man gcc
You can search for a string in the man page the same way you do in Firefox. Type a "/" first, type away, hit enter, it'll be highlighted.
