Exclamation weird font in app

hi.
I've installed twin (a text-mode window manager) on my work's centOS.

the problem is all text on twin is rendered as weird symbols as font. (semi-graphic ascii symbols -- NOT any language as japanesse)
luckily remember where is the 'quit' menu, coz all on it is un-readable.

any idea where can I begin to look at? -other apps (such as htop) shows fonts normally.

I'm at lost in this.
thanks in advance

Does reading http://linuz.sns.it/~max/twin/docs/Tutorial wrt fonts help? Else can you attach a screenshot? May help.

(an important detail: all of this is under putty)
despite I changed fonts, it didn't work, til I got the point was to change the char-set to utf-8 in putty, then fonts began to render ok.
I'm experiencing other issues, such as errors in 'chars transmition' ..mean, keyboard shortcuts to twin doesn't work, and when running vim under it, despite of be typing any letter, linux recieve something like '@\n' (arroba + LF).
guess it's also related to char-set transmission .. but need time to play with. (and being at work usually have not time to play)

If have improvements will comment.

best regards,
