my alsa-related problem is goes like this: when playing music, every once in a while the audio will sloooooow waaaaay down and get kind of low and crackly. this only lasts for about 5 seconds, but happens pretty often.... this ever happen to anyone else? should I get the new ALSA? go back to OSS?

A little more info would help.
Sound card?
Kernel version?
ALSA version?
Using a sound server?

At first glance it seems to me like you may just be running a soundserver like ARTS at too low a priority, and as you use your computer for other things it steals cycles from the sound.
