Watching movies freezes computer

I've been plagued by this problem for quite a long time. After 5-45 minutes of watching a movie on my box, playback stops and X totally locks up. Keyboard and all. The only way to correct this problem is to ssh in from another box, kill the X process, and start it again.

I get this problem in both mplayer and gxine.

Here's what I've tried:
1) In mplayer, using different -vo options to swithc it
2) Disabeling audio with -ao null

I've got an nvidia card with the latest drivers. Somebody told me to try to start X with the vesa driver, but it won't work on my box.

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated. I'd really like to be able to watch movies on my new athlon64 box...

P.S. Fullscreen games work just fine

I've never seen an error message about it, even in the logs. I've also checked the X log files.
