Sorry if this is a simple question but I don't have access to the vmware docs at the moment.
I have 3 virtual machines that I have created. The first one was setup with an 8gig drive. The others were created from copying the physical files. and thus cloning the setups. I complained originally at my lack of disk space given to me. Well now a user of one of the machines cannot complete a yum update as there is no more space left on /. I can add other virtual disks to increase capacity but I do not know if I can grow the / partition from its original 8gigs.

Does anyone know if this is possible and how to do it

You have to make another virtual disk or mount the virtual disk and copy the files someone where else. Though it could be that the file /var/log/messages or yum logs has got too big and filling all the space.

I suggest making a seperate partition for /var/log that is about 128 MB minimum, so it does not effect the installation when logs gets too huge.

Try using LVM2 or EVMS.
