We need to know what version/distro of Linux you're using, so we can tell you where to get this file. Chances are it's in your online repos too...have you checked there first?

Suse 11.3 OSS : # zypper in glib2-devel

rpm -ql glib2-devel | grep libgthread : No libgthread-2.0.la in Suse.
Get the file from this package ( It's a very small text file.)
http://packages.debian.org/wheezy/i3...0-dev/download

But there is really no reason to compile vlc :
http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-suse.html
> Installing VLC using 1-click-installs > on 11.3 >> vlc.ymp

Click the downloaded file 'vlc.ymp'.
Then Yast will install vlc and its dependencies.

..
