VLC (0.8.2) GUI problem on Slack 10.2

I installed sup's vlc (along with his recommended packages) from linuxpackages.net

So far, i've installed

vlc-0.8.2-i486-2sup.tgz
a52dec-0.7.4-i486-2kjz.tgz
libcddb-1.2.0-i686-1jto.tgz
libcdio-0.76-i486-2asz.tgz
libdvbpsi3-0.1.4-i486-1sup.tgz
libebml-0.7.6-i486-1ahl.tgz
libmatroska-0.8.0-i486-1ahl.tgz
openslp-1.2.1-i486-1kjz.tgz
vcdimager-0.7.23-i686-1jto.tgz

all from linux packages. The rest of the recommended packages I have already installed from some time before.

Now, my problem is that when I run vlc, I get a bunch of errors and then this garbled box on my screen. It looks like a bunch of horizontal strips (white and light blue)

Here's the an excerpt of the errors
Code:
patrick@rjx-desktop:~$ vlc
VLC media player 0.8.2 Janus
[00000232] main dialogs provider error: no dialogs provider module matched "any"
[00000229] skins2 interface error: No suitable dialogs provider found
[00000229] skins2 interface: skin: VLC OSX Interface author: BigBen
[00000241] main decoder error: no suitable decoder module for fourcc `png '.
VLC probably does not support this image format.
.
.
.
(a bunch of those)
.
.
.
[00000229] skins2 interface error: Invalid image size (null width or height)
.
.
.
(a bunch of those)
.
.
.
and then it shows the garbled box.

I can't figure out how to fix it. I even copied the skins2 folder from /usr/share/vlc to get rid of a few errors (something about not finding ~/.vlc/skins2/default.vlt or something like that).

Thanks, but I already had the wxgtk package (for wxmaxima) and I've also read the readme. If I didn't, I would be asking questions like "Why does VLC say libxxx not found?" or whatever. Then I might be flamed with "RTFM" and the like.

Code:
patrick@rjx-desktop:/var/log/packages$ ls | grep a52

patrick@rjx-desktop:/var/log/packages$ ls | grep vcdimager

patrick@rjx-desktop:/var/log/packages$ ls | grep wxgtk

patrick@rjx-desktop:/var/log/packages$ ls | grep ebml
libebml-0.7.6-i486-1ahl
patrick@rjx-desktop:/var/log/packages$
I think that's all the packages in the README. I also think it shows that I have them installed.
