ok... so after alot of messing around, i finally got my sound up and running. After recieving too many 'decoder errors' from totem, i decided to install Mplayer... after the installation, everything worked fine! Mplayer played MP3's and all sorts of visual media (with sound)
Now, it only seems to play the flicks without any sound, and mp3's seem to play, but i cant hear anything... this is very odd, as i play and hear mp3's in xmms!
Anyone know what could be going on... cos i have't got an f'ing clue?!?!?!
ok... so after some extensive fiddling, i have now got sound for some videos, but not for others... what could be the cause of this? i dont think its codec, as i have most of them installed....
do you start mplayer from command-line (terminal)?
If usually not - do so now - you will see a fair amount of output - and also the cause of mplayer not playing audio...
It could be related to a sound daemon running and temporarily blocking your audio-device.
ok... so here is the output if i launch mplayer from the terminal:
Code:

There seems to be no mention of an error message, or as to why sound is working for some video files, and not others!
edit: there does seem to be an error... opening mplayer is not a problem, however opening a file in the terminal via mplayer shows:

MPlayer interrupted by signal 11 in module: decode_video
- MPlayer crashed by bad usage of CPU/FPU/RAM.
Recompile MPlayer with --enable-debug and make a 'gdb' backtrace and
disassembly. Details in DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports_what.html#bugreports_crash.
- MPlayer crashed. This shouldn't happen.
It can be a bug in the MPlayer code _or_ in your drivers _or_ in your
gcc version. If you think it's MPlayer's fault, please read
DOCS/HTML/en/bugreports.html and follow the instructions there. We can't and
won't help unless you provide this information when reporting a possible bug.
alsa-uninit: pcm closed
Yes - the second one was what I was askink you to do - the first one will of course just print info about usage, since you did not give it a file to play...
In this particular case audio was not the cause of the crash - but the video failed to be decoded and made mplayer crash.

Next questions would be:
What distribution is this?
Did you compile it yourself?
If so - do as the error suggests - recompile with debugging enabled.
What does the output look like with a file mplayer plays whithout crashing (both: audio and video with audio) - since that actually seems to happen sometimes?
To me it looks like its the fault of your nvidia-drivers - maybe not correctly set up...
MPlayer v1.0pre7try2 i initially compliled from source, but i thought doing a yum install might fix/retreive anything that might be missing!
When i run Mplayer from the Applications tab, i can run the file fine, but there is just no audio! if i run it from the terminal, Mplayer will not start at all...
What i find odd, is that if i load another movie file (which i know will work) after an audioless one, it will play with no problems.
With regards to my nvidia drivers, i will look into it now, but as i am relativly new to linux i don't exactly know what a "correct setup" will look like!
Thanks for the help so far
