Video processing on linux

Hi. I have the following problem. I need to master a number of DVDs. I am using a Canon XM2 digital video camera to take videos. I then want to master a DVD which will not have any menus or similar, but will just play back material recorded. Hopefully with indexes to allow skipping fowards and backwards.

I have access to one Windows machine with Adobe Premiere installed which I can use to do all of this. However that machine is in high use, and it is difficult for me to get enough time on it. Hence I would like to use my Linux lapto to do some of the work.

As my laptop (Toshiba Tecra A2 running fairly standard Fedora Core 4) does not have firewire I cannot download to it. But, I could use the Windows machine to download from the camera onto a USB HD, and then connect that to my laptop. I would then need to compress the AVI file ready for mastering, and then create the DVD.

What easily available Linux software could I use to compress the video, do some basic editing (brightness/contrast, and copy the mono soundtrack to both audio channels), and then master the DVD ready for burning?

Thanks in anticipation,

Ross-c

to transfert your video from windows to laptop, use a network directely, wifi too.
for manipuling video (extract, transform, compress, etc...), you use mencoder, mplayer, avifile player, transcode, etc... i know a product which i read very good thing : Broadcast 2000, multitrack audio and video (infinitely)
