Does anyone know of a command line program that can do some basic video editing?
What I would like is to be able to type a command that says, "take all AVI files in the folder and combined them with 2sec fade transition between each video clip"
or "take all AVI files in this folder and add a SEPIA effect to each one"
Anyone know of anything like that?
Just though it would cut down on some editing time for me.
Well, editing videos on the command line is a rather illogical activity, so I doubt you are going to find much software. I certainly don;t know of any.
The closest you will probably get is Mencoder, which can rencode from the command line, as well as do some trimming and joining. That should satisfy your first example, but the second one is going to be where you have problems.
I've use Mencoder for trimming and converting Videos all the time. But, I'm not sure if it can do transition (Let me know if I'm wrong).
I guess if I wanted I could convert my videos to JPEG files with Mencoder and add effects with something like ImageMagik and then convert it back with Mencoder. Just thought there maybe a more direct route. Plus I'm not sure how much quality loss I'll get with all the converting from one format to another.
May not be time-practical for just one use, but if this is a regular task for you, here's something to consider:
Cinelerra works via XML files. It leaves original media untouched, and all transformations from original to output are defined in the XML. So it would be quite conceivable to write a script that generates XML for all the inputs and transitions between them, then call Cinelerra to render it.
I haven't checked to see if Cinelerra can render from a command line option, but even if not it would be mostly automated.
