i have a 64bit 3D Prophet Kyro2 video card.
when i tried to run startx it gave me an error
/etc/X11/(errn2)
ithink it all so said something about fiel missing... ithink i cant remember.
thanx for any input,
wicked
also what would be a good video card that works very well with linux....
Pretty much anything except the cards that have only been on the shelf for 15 mins. I don't know how old yours is. If X is missing a file, you should re-install the X RPMS. If you could tell us which file is missing, or anything else specific to the errors you're getting, that'd make things a bit easier.
ok...i think i got it. to run linix with my video card i have to run with no framebuffer. now let see if i can get this to work.
still what is a good video card to run linux with???
Depends on what you want to do. I've got an NVidia Geforce2 Something that runs fine. I've had X running (very poorly) on a P110 with 32Mb RAM and an 8bit ISA VGA card. X (not Linux) supports pretty much most cards.
Sorry to disappoint you man, but Kyro chipsets are not supported by XFree86 as of yet. I don't see any documentation on http://www.XFree86.org about future plans on supporting the chipset, the PowerVR chipset (the parent of Kyro from years back) is well supported under XFree86, but not the child. If you want a good graphic performance go for ATI boards, if you need speed and decent graphics performance go for NVIDIA chipsets.
thanx for the info i just relised that too. i wnet to the hercules site and they said they did not support linux. but ther testing a driver that would let x run with this video card. it supost to come out some time this month. but thank you very much.

Rep:
3d prophet hercules 4500 video card problems with Red Hat 7.2 installation
Hi everybody!
This is my first post here and I am a linux newbie.
I'm installing Red Hat 7.2 but during "X configuration" my video card (3d prophet hercules 4500 64Mb TV-OUT) doesn't appear in the list of video cards to choose from.
What should I do?
I suppose I can choose another card, but which one in the list (Hercules or not) is similar to my video card?
At this moment I cannot start X System (at the end of installation).
I don't use Linux for games nor for 3D applications. So I would be very happy even if I could only start X System at 1024x768 with 256 colors.
well i also have a 3d prophet 4500 vidoe card. i was never able to get mine to work so i bought a nvidia geforce2 video card. it runs x with no problem.
Hey so am i, that is why gave up on my 3d prophet videp card and bought nvidia geforce 2 card. i have mandrake 8.1, so i have to do is type XFdrake, then change video card and then unlisted and finally chose FBDev. wich is no framebuffer. thats basicly all the info i know.
