I'd say just muck around with it, generally newer programs will follow the rules of the bronze, silver, gold, platinum... Though older programs, or older variations of programs tend to be completely different. Go and read the winehq site, it has all the information you need. Generally all you need to do is wine something.exe and it installs and puts a link on your desktop. Though sometimes that link doesn't work (usually it does now, they are pretty good with that). Other than that, winetricks is a beauty to learn about. If you see anything like .net frame work or stuff related to ms runtime libraries or whatever look into winetricks.
