Red face Using a linux box with no monitor - vnc resolution problem

Hello.

I'm planning to use a linux(ubuntu?) box with no monitor keyboard or mouse.. Only the network and vnc to control it. The problem is that when there is no monitor connected, ubuntu thinks that it can only support the 640x480 and 320x240 resolutions and nothing more. I couldn't get the xrandr command to change resolutions t anything other then the two I listed.
Is it possible to force a resolution change? How exactly would I do that?
