Then you should set up a VPN. Doing this via SSH is possible, but the result is not nearly as good as a proper VPN.
I spent some time setting this up for myself at the start of the pandemic, and the result has been superb:
openvpn.net (community/free edition)
I'm not a networking guy, so there was a ton of learning... But completely worth it. In the end it took me a couple of weeks of trial and error to get it set up exactly as I wanted, but we got there. I had one computer at the other end running Chrome remote desktop, which allowed me to mess with settings from home without losing the connection. We also use virtual machines, and being able to access the hypervisor's web interface remotely is a beautiful thing.
