I was running an old alpha of Mozilla 1.5, i figured I'd look and check out the new versions so I downloaded 1.5 (final i think, point is its newer than mine). I run the installer and have it save over my old copy (old files will be deleted blah blah blah). I thought it wouldn't overwrite the plugins but it did, no matter. I just had to re-download the Flash plugin, an mplayer plugin and re-link my JVM. Well apparently symbolic links decided to stop working. I sym linked the same plugin that I used for my previous install (the one in the ns610-gcc32 folder) and i linked it to my new plugin folder for mozilla. THe browser doesn't recognize it. I tried the other two even though I know those aren't right but it still didn't work.... do I have to reinstall Java to get it working again? this seems like i shouldn't have to but im all out of ideas.

Does Mozilla recognize the plugin? Do you see it if you do:

about:plugins

in the URL bar?

it doesn't show up, however, i was just dinking around and i copied the plugin (which i know you aren't supposed to do) into mozilla's plugin directory. Then it was able to recognize the plugin (in aboutlugins) however, when it tried to load it, mozilla would close, so its able to recognize it, so somethings weird.

I had some strange occurance with linking my java also. My symbolic link was not working. then I tried to copy it like you, but had the same problem of it shutting down. Then I tried a symbolic link the second time and it worked. know idea why.

you have to upgrade java to version 1.4.2 and redo your linkage to the plugin.

i have version 1.4.2 already... maybe ill just re-download it... although this doesn't seem to make any sense.

mozilla.org always tells you NOT to install over an existing install because it will mess things up. Maybe you should wipe your mozilla directory and install afresh.

whups! missed that in your original post. sorry. what version of 1.4.2 are you running? i'm running 1.4.2_01b6 right now and this seems to work. maybe your running an older subversion?

well then i have a question, what would the best way to install a new version be? just install in a new directory and start all over? this makes updating seem stupid to me. anyways, i got it working, i just had to re-install the j2re package (i messed up a little, but its all sorted out) thanks everyone ^_^

well maybe not delete the old install, but just rename the old version's install directory. that's what i do anyway.

edit: man i wish there was the ability for nested quotes....
