Unison file sync and hardlinks

This is driving my nuts! I use unison to keep my computers in sync with each other, and it works pretty well. However, I have a file that I'd like to keep synchronized that is hardlinked to other files (which are outside my unison repo). The problem is that when it changes, unison breaks the hardlink. I guess this is because unison does an atomic copy and rewrites the file, rather than modifying it. How do I fix it/avoid the problem?

(Partially) answered my own question. Managed to get round it using symlinks - in case anyone else finds this page - but by putting the symlink outside the repo pointing to the actual file inside (the other way round doesn't work for my case). I'm marking this question as solved, but if anyone can answer the original question it might be useful to other people who find this.
