I am running Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE 3.(5?)I have done something, but I don't know what...well that's not quite true, I changed something in file type actions ... but I don't know what. I tried to stop it updating but was too slow/late!! Please help!!
The problem.
I have lots of files called xxx.jpg and I used to click on them and they would open with gwenview and be displayed fine.
Now if I click on them gwenview opens but all I get is a grey screen where the image SHOULD be.
If I rename the file to (for example) xxx.jp (can be any extension, except those in the file action list) and open it the image is there!!!!
By the way, if I open a file aaa.jp with gwenview and then save it as bbb.jpg and then try to open it again with gwenview it doesn't work (grey screen)???!
If I look at the properties of the file - They all look correct - I think, and if I look at the file type actions *.jpg,*.JPG,*.jpeg and *.JPEG all open with gwenviewofr firefox or krita or gimp (in that order)
I have tried everythig I can think of but it's still the same
How do I fix this, please help.
Please
Hi thanks for the interest!
If I open the files with any other app. they open fine.
But konqueror shows no preview and gwenview seems to get confused with the file extensions - if I call them .jpg or any of the "normal" extensions they don't recognise them/ or fail to open.
if I delete the extension they work fine *shrugs with big frown*
What could be the problem- I'm seriously confused.
My first guess would be that Gwenview has somehow gotten corrupted.
Since you are using Kubuntu, try removing Gwenview with Synaptic or whatever the Kubuntu equivalent is, testing the view function again (that's just precautionary--I've learned the hard way that it is wise to test at each step of a diagnostic process), then reinstalling Gwenview.
It could be that, when you look at Synaptic, it will report that Gwenview is a "broken package." If so, try a repair first.

Sorry - that was one of the first things I did ;-)
I have tried removing Gwenview and then re-installing it. No change.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Drat.
Try creating a new user and testing in that. If Gwenview works in the new user, that indicates that something has gone awry in the user profile.
Something else might be to try starting Gwenview from a command line and noting what error messages, if any, it throws.
I just started Gwenview successfully on my Slackware box. Here's the startup messages. I suspect the error have more to do with starting it from the command line, but that's just a guess. I am no expert, just another user:
Code:
bash-3.1$ gwenview
"/usr/bin/gwenview(5867)" Error in thread 3049391872 : "org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.ServiceUnknown - The name org.kde.nepomuk.services.nepomukstorage was not provided by any .service files"
"/usr/bin/gwenview(5867)" Error in thread 3049391872 : "QLocalSocket::connectToServer: Invalid name"
gwenview(5867): Attempt to use QAction "edit_redo" with KXMLGUIFactory!
gwenview(5867): Attempt to use QAction "edit_undo" with KXMLGUIFactory!
bash-3.1$
Thanks, a new user sounds like a good idea, I'll try it tonight.
I tried invoking Gwenview from a terminal and it looked ok no errors that I remember( did it about a week ago) I'll come back when I've tried it.
Hi, Thanks frankbell- that fixes the problem, but I still would like to fix it "properly" so I'm going to experiment copying the various dot files over into the old "faulty" profile to determine the screwed up one.
I presume that is where the problem is? - in a dot file?

More than likely. You can try this: rename an exiting dot file to something else (I usually append dot old to the file or directory name--I can always move it back if I need to). Log out of KDE, than log back in, and a new one should get created when you use the application in question.
You might start with ~/.kde/share/apps.
Do it one file at a time. It can be tedious, but it's foolproof. I've found that when I change multiple things at a time, I end up either not fixing it or not knowing how I fixed it.
Thanks frankbell, that was the answer- I found a useful button on Konquerors setup screen called "default" when I clicked on it,it changed the standard file 'open with' settings to sensible options.
I can now see all my image files correctly -NB I had to restart the pc but it works hurray
