Ubuntu dpkg --configure problem with kernel header dkms

Hi all,

for some unknown reason DPKG runs into problem when I want to do any package updates to my system (Ubuntu 17.10 Kernel: 4.13.0-19-generic)

APT asks me to run dpkg --configure -a but unfortunately the process immediately stops at

Code:
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d/dkms 4.13.0-21-generic /boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-21-generic
Then the process apparently comes to a standstill, nothing happens.

When I terminate the process via CTRL+C I receive the following message is shown:

Code:
Failed to process /etc/kernel/header_postinst.d at /var/lib/dpkg/info/linux-headers-4.13.0-21-generic.postinst line 110.

The line displayed changes every time I retried, so I guess it is not related to any specific line in the postinstall script for this linux header.

I am not using the proprietary NVIDIA driver for my graphics card, so the suggestion to switch back to the NOVEAU driver is not an option I could try. (see: Ask Ubuntu 1 Ask Ubuntu 2)

I would be very happy to hear about your ideas on how to solve this problem.

Judging from number of issues arising out of version 17.10, I would say go back to Xenial. Not much help, I know, but maybe the best long-term solution is to stick to LTS versions, as a suggestion, IMHO. Best wishes!

Unhappy

Thanks ChuangTzu

With the command

Code:
apt install -f
as was recommended in the link you shared, the same problem occurs.

APT gets stuck at:

Code:
run-parts: executing /etc/kernel/postinst.d/dkms 4.13.0-21-generic /boot/vmlinuz-4.13.0-21-generic
Any further ideas?
