Trying desperatly to install MPlayer

I've been trying for 2 days to install MPlayer so that it will play my videofiles and have all the codecs available, but I haven't gotten anywhere. Could someone give me really easy step-by-step instructions on how to do this?

I have the .rpm package downloaded (mplayer for i586), I have nothing else.

Please explain this to me as if I would be 4 years old, I really want my Linux to function properly with my videofiles...

I'm running SuSE 9.1 on an Athlon 1200mHz if that helps...

follow the installation steps. If you get stuck, post it in here . For general info about installing programs in Linux, take a look in here:

Hello!

To install Mplayer you'll need some other RPM's too
You need the player, codecs, fonts and a skin. For each of them there's an RPM.

http://sunsite.icm.edu.pl/pub/linux/...yer/other.html

Download them to a directory and "rpm -Uhv *.rpm" ,then start the player with "gmplayer"

I think you can download the RPM's for RedHat or Fedora too.

Well, personally, as far as MPlayer is concerned, the *best* way you should install it is by compiling it from source. It takes longer and more research, but the benefits are so much more noticeable than with other simpler applications. This is for a number of reasons.

For one, a binary package is built for a generic processor architecture, usually lower than the one you're using (i.e i586 package on an i686 system). In addition to the decreased performance overall, MPlayer will have to use processor detection, which slows start time. Also there's a lot of great features a package may not include, either for legal or technical reasons (i.e certain codecs, plugins, DVD support, etc.).

That aside, installing an RPM is a pretty straightforward process. Basically you just run "rpm -Uvh <filename>" (at least these are the options I regularly use). It would be really helpful if you replied with some output from trying to install the package (i.e dependancy errors, etc.). If your distro supports it, I'd also recommend "Red Carpet 2" from Ximian (hard to find now with the new stupid site, so just google for it) for installing RPMs.

Or even easier. You can install mplayer through SuSE's YAST. Although I've not tried it, seems to be the easiest alternative:
