Trouble using mutt

I'm sure I'm being an idiot. I've been using mutt for years and today I can't send a simple message with attachment:
Code:
$ echo hello | mutt -s "testing" -a Dues1.pdf mfoley@novatec-inc.com
Can't stat mfoley@novatec-inc.com: No such file or directory
Why is it trying to attache the recipient address?

Because you need '--' to terminate the file list.

Code:
Attach a file to your message using MIME. When attaching single or multiple files, separating
filenames and recipient addresses with "--" is mandatory, e.g. mutt -a image.jpg -- addr1 or mutt
 -a img.jpg *.png -- addr1 addr2. The -a option must be placed at the end of command line
options.

Wow, I though I had mutt figured out. I don't recall the -- thing. Interestingly, this site: https://www.tecmint.com/send-mail-fr...-mutt-command/, gives the following example:
Code:
# mutt -s "Site Backup" -a /backups/backup.tar  -c tarunika@centos58server.example.com root@centos58server.example.com
No dashes. mutt --help does shows the dashes. Using that did work.
