Trouble getting OpenVPN to run on OpenWRT 12.09-rc1... suggestions?

I've been working on this for a few weeks now, I've tried following this guide (both sections; there's kind of two guides there), and this guide. I believe that using a tap device is what I want because I want to use the VPN for gaming and connecting to my home LAN (please correct me if I'm wrong).

So I have a fresh copy of OpenWRT installed (because I got to frustrated messing with config files and wanted a total reset) and I am open to any advice and guides you have to offer. I've already tried the OpenWRT forums already but nobody has replied to my post in about a week and a half.
