trouble accessing internet on debian

Just intalled debian, I pinged the router, pinged the ethernet card, ran netstat everything looks fine. When I run pppoeconf I get the following response:

"Sorry, I scanned 1 interface(s), but the Access Concentrator of your provider did not respond."

Does anyone know what this means?

I don't think you need pppoeconf on your ethernet card. Post the results of 'ifconfig'. You can configure your network card using netenv or etherconf or by manually editing some files.
