Transcode and FFMpeg(libavcodec) issues

I am trying to install transcode as it is one thing required so I can start copying DVD's well the problem is it does not compile. Everything seems to go ok but when it is done I get the following message.

ERROR: requirement failed: cannot link against libavcodec
libavcodec can be found in the following packages:
FFMpeg http://www.ffmpeg.org/

I have tried installing ffmpeg several times in a few different ways like with --enable-shared, and transcode with --enable-libavcodec-static. But unfortunaly nothing seems to work. If you have any suggestions I would be more than willing to try them. By the way I am using Slackware 10.2 kernel 2.6.13

Instead of using Transcode you might be better using mencoder, the encoder from mplayer, works very well. Never had much look with transcode myself.

That is a good suggestion but unfortunately DVDShrink says it requires Transcode to compile
