I am looking for a tool to graphically monitor my FTP usage and speed, but in saying that I want also want to be able to generate a report for the last 6 months.
Why you may ask??, Well I receive a bill from my ISP saying I had average 90GB a month since June 2007, and it went as high as 380GB !!! in September, now this is impossible, but I need to generate some evidence from the Ethernet's card as to what the traffic was on the server....
So wait, you want to create retroactive graphs? I.E. graphs of what happened the last six months?
Creating graphs of usage from now on is easy enough, but you aren't going to be able to graph things that happened in the past since the data was never being collected. Assuming the machine was never off you could check the total data transfered over the interface, but even then, I don't know if there are any limitations on those registers.
Yep, thats correct, I want graphs for the last 6 months...The server uptime is 370 days so I think somewhere the information would have been collected. somewhere??
Where would I look for this info, somewhere like in the /proc directory??, If not I dont know how I am going to prove the usage stats....
It depends what software you have installed. Each interface tracks the total number of bytes transferred in our out since it was brough up (have a look at the output of ifconfig).
There is info maintained under /proc/net but it is updated dynamically and isn't stored/archived. The sysstat tools allow you to monitor transfer rates (along with other things) if you have them installed. However they normally log under /var/log/sa and don't go back further than 1 month.
You could try your FTP logs and use a script to extract data from them.
