The Coms Software Melting Pot
Hello,
Here is my present circumstances, I use the following software for the purposes mentioned...
Pidgin: Mainly for one on one text chat
XChat: For group one on one chat and keeping up to date with groups
Ekiga: For audio/video phone and SIP calls
Thunderbird: For non-instant e-mail, news, or RSS
All of these have their own version of an 'Address Book'
To me these applications are crucual, and when one is loaded they all are. Also each of these are cross-platform and you can choose the location for profile directory for easy portability.
Thunderbird is trying to be more like Outlook with the Lightning.
Pidgin is trying to be like an IRC client
Gaim was once PhoneGaim moving in to the SIP area.
And now Mozilla are doing a Eudora!
Imagine one application that does all the bits my current applications do using all the standards you can throw at it including LDAP support so your data on each contact can be merged in to one as well.
If a business wanted this they would look to Outlook or Exchange which misses alot of these protocols off.
The Linux world can go one better than this!
Thoughts People!
