Text output 'scrambled' in Konsole, ok in other apps

I'm having a hard time getting Konsole to work properly. Text is scrambled and unreadable. Even YaKuake scrambles the text (although rolling the window up, then down again fixes it until I type something again).

This is what I am talking about:

All other X apps work perfectly, so I can't imagine it is an X problem. GNOME terminals (in KDE or in GNOME) work fine. If I switch to a text console (tty), I get no redraw errors either.

Any clues or ideas on how to fix this?

(SUSE, kernel 2.6.16.21-0.15-smp, KDE 3.5.1, level "a")
