Tar issue


Ok having a minor issue with tar

after createing an archive with tar -cvf notes.tar file file2

this works fine and shows that it created the archive but when i go to list the arcive it does
not show the files in the arcive

tar --list notes.tar

<at this point it just hangs untill i ctrl esc. it >

any ideas ?

Have you tried moving the tarball to an empty folder, then un-tarring it? Do you get the files back?

Yes when i attempt to extract the archive it does the same thing just hangs never extracts the files? Yea im perplexed by all of it

The only other thing I can suggest is that your tar installation is corrupt. Time to re-install or upgrade tar.

strange i tested it on 2 diffrent computers with diffrent distros. I was thinking the
same thing that you were that there was something wrong with the tar utility
but I wouldent think that there is something with both installations condisering
that tar works fine when trying to untar other things that others have created
it seams to just to have issues with archives that i have created.

I tried what you are doing. I can't list the contents with "tar --list file.tar". the machine hangs. I can, however, extract with "tar xvf file.tar"

Maybe the list feture with tar doesent work correctly and no one has noticed :P

I got tar list option to work with :

Code:
tar tvf <archive.tar>
not directly by :

Code:
tar tv <archive.tar>
I don't know if it's normal or not though.
