.tar.gz and .tar.bz2 software installation


How to install tarballs, can someone explain me , please?

Extract the tarball, go into the created folder via console, if there's a configure file type ./configure to start the process, if that has completed successfully type make if that process completes successfully you need to become root then type make install and that's it. Type exit to become a normal user again.

Additionally, look in for files named README and/or INSTALL. If you are lucky they will be more than the templates of these files created by the autotools and will have more detailed installation instructions. Another more likely source of info is ./configure --help to see what options can be 'turned on' or 'turned off'.
