system speed optimization...what should I cut out first?

I've been toying with the idea of "trimming the fat" on my linux system that runs at roughly 800 mHz. Right now I am using fluxbox in X and have done some port closing, basicly to cut down on unneccisary process'.
Im just looking for pointers as to what else I should look into cutting out to get better performance by getting rid of un needed system processes in slackware 9.1.
Thanks in advance

You could make sure you only run the service you need. For example, if you don't need cups then don't run it. Have a look through /etc/rcx.d and see if there are any services you wish to get rid of.

All of Slack's start-up files are in

/etc/rc.d/

You can stop a service like Sendmail by using chmod to make the script not executable - depending on your situation typical candidates might be Samba, Apache, Sendmail, PCMCIA

etc ect ect
