System Freezing When Switching Between TTYs and X

Hello Friends,

I have a group of computers on which sometimes I need to switch to a console terminal or even kill X with ctrl+alt+backspace. The problem is that sometimes (usually after at least a day or so of uptime) when I make the switch, the computer freezes when I switch back to X. The system sits frozen with a cursor and distorted lines on the screen.

I have tried Ubuntu, Fedora Core 4, and Suse. The problem persists on all distrobutions so far. I feel that the problem lies in what they all have in common, X.

I have tested the problem with different resolutions, even matching resolutions on X and the TTYs. No luck.

Like I said, the problem does seem to relate to uptime, so my guess is that something is filling up. I have also changed BIOS video options. I don't think that has helped either.

By the way, these computers have Intel integrated graphics.

It would be great if I could get some tips to get this fixed.

Thanks in advance.

xorg DRI and other related rendering junk seems to be proken in about 50 different ways. This is one of the problems.
try disabling stuff.
xorg is SO much better than xfree (roll-eyes)

I agree with foo_bar_foo. However, Fedora ships with xorg while Ubuntu ships with xfree86, and since you've tried both with the same results, then my guess is that the problem is related to the intel integrated graphics device.

Those integrated devices share the system memory, so that should be your main concern. Check that you have the correct device driver for your specific chipset, prehaps re-installing it would help if something is broken.
Also check which driver X is loading in the [device] section, perhaps switching to another device driver (that also works ) would solve it.
