System bogging down on start up and program access slow

This just started happening, Grub reported a boot error1.5 and the system hung up and I had to do a manual restart.
I have gone from a 25 seconds or less boot up time to just over 4 mins and program access takes forever and sometimes crashes.
It's acting like windows when it needs to defrag.

Ubuntu 9.10
1.5 Gigs DDR 800
800MHZ FSB

If you didn't change anything back up your data, your disk might be dying.

Agreed. I have encountered the same sort of issues on Windows machines many times when the hard drive has been on the way out. The most recent was about a month ago with a drive that was only 8 months old.

Agreed, it does sound like drive failure to me as well.
Got lucky! Was going to work on it last night and the system came back as if nothing were ever wrong..backed up everything.
Thanks for the input guys, your all cool in my book!
