SuSe 9 - rpm, modem, kopette

Hi Guys
I am just thinking of installing Suse 9. They say it support rpm. What kind of rpm. Does it uses the redhat ones or others?
Secondly, it says it recognizes most winmodems. I have got on in my machine called HAMR56. Anyone with good expereince.
Thirdly, it has wine installed on it. has anybody got Word working on it nicely.
How is the Messaging client working _ kopette?
I have mandrake Linux but i could never make wine work on it. nor GAIM
Thanks for the help and sharing your expereince.
