suggest a good archiving app

hey there,
i am running ubuntu linux. i am hosting 4 websites where the user directories are the directories the sites are pointed to. all under /var/www
i need an app that will compress everything in the directories and back them up to a shared directory on another computer on the lan (192.168.1.2). I also need the permissions maintained.
i am doing this to have a ready backup in case of a hardware failure on my main computer.

any suggestions?

The canonical solution is to use `tar` combined with gzip or bzip2.
